Shangrao Normal University was previously called Shangrao Normal Junior College when it was founded in 1958. It changed its name to Gan Dong Bei University in 1959, but closed down during the period of the Culture Revolution. Authorizes by the State Council, Shangrao Normal Junior College was restored in 1978. Then, with authorization of Ministry of Education and People's Government of Jiangxi Province, it changed its name to Shangrao Normal University in March 2000.In November 2005; it passed the evaluation of undergraduate teaching level held by Ministry of Education. Over the past 50 years, more than 30,000 students graduated and work in every walk of life all over China .

Shangrao Normal University is located in the south suburb in Shangrao city of northeastern of Jinagxi. State Highway 320, Hu-Kun Expressway, Zhe Gan Railway and Heng Nan Railway run by with easy communications. It stands at the joint to the famous national scenic spot of Mt. Shangqin 、 Mt.Longhu 、 Mt. Guifeng and even the international-level busy tourist destination Mt. Wu Yi as well as Mt. Huangshan . It is full of favorable environment.

At present, SNU covers an area of 983mu(65.5 hectares) and its total building area is more than 300,000 square meters. It has an enrollment of 11,305 full-time students from 30 provinces and 2126 adult education students. There are 942 faculties and staffs. Among them, there are 57 professors, 157 associate professors including 245 doctors and masters, 3 fellows enjoying the State Council Special Allowance, 14 Ph.D. supervisor and supervisors for master degree candidate. The university is composed of 9 Academic Area in 78 specialties, including 5 Provincial Key Subjects, 1 Provincial Key Lab and one Model Center of Experiment Teaching of Jiangxi Higher Learning Schools.

In SNU, there are 13 departments and 4 public teaching sections, which involve in Literature, Science, Pedagogy, History, Law, Technology and Engineering, Agronomy, Economics and Science of Administration with Department of Politics and Law, Department of Chinese, Journalism and Communication, Department of History and Geography, Department of Foreign language, Department of Pedagogics, Department of Economics, Department of Mathematics and Computer, Department of Physics, Department of Chemic, Department of Life Sciences, Department of Physical Education, Department of Music, Department of Fine Arts, Section of Social Science Teaching, Section of Public English Teaching, Section of Public Physical Education Teaching and Section of Computer Science Teaching. Meanwhile, there are 11 reaching institutions, such as Institute of Agricultural Science, Institute of Chuhsi Study, Institute of Philosophy, Institute of Language, Institute of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Institute of Organic Chemistry , etc.

SNU is well quipped with a series of high standard equipments in laboratories, multi-media sound labs, computer network control center, audio-visual teaching lab, digital piano classroom, gymnasium, standard plastic ground track field, etc. It has two libraries and two electronic reading rooms with a collection of books over one million volumes and all kinds of electronic reading materials. The total value reaches RMB60,000,000yuan.

“ Journal of Shangrao Normal University ” (Social Science Branch Version) is in the list of National 100 Best Journals on Social Science, Double 10 Models Journals on Arts and the core periodical on humanities society scientific published by colleges and universities in China. Its natural science branch version is listed in the scope of input of "Chinese Mathematical Documentary Database ” and "Chinese Physics Database ” . “ Chuhsi Academy Periodical ” is well known at home and abroad. In recent years, teachers and researchers have finished 185 research projects with national and provincial natural scientific fund; More than 1510 academic essays have been published, among which there are 25 items of works are awarded.

SNU positively advances the education for all-around development, pays special attention to students ' teaching basic skills training and strengthen " Three Calligraphy One Language", which specially introduced by "People's Daily". The students from Department of Mathematics attended National Mathematics Modeling Competition for 3 times and were awarded twice.
